South Carolina’s tailgating scene is legendary, transforming the football game into a day-long party. It’s a lifestyle that includes expensive prime parking, renting a game-day condos, and luxury-equipped, retired train cabooses called “Cockabooses“.

The dedication to tailgating is so strong that it has become an integral part of the game-day experience.

These “Cockabooses” are set up on an unused railway track outside the stadium. They are equipped with amenities like kitchens, bathrooms, and air conditioning, and can accommodate fans for game-day parties.

Fans gather in Gamecock Park or the State Fairgrounds to grill, socialize, and enjoy the “Gamecock Walk.”

The scene can range from casual gatherings with lawn chairs to elaborate setups, including unique, privately-owned “Cockaboose” train cars.

The crew at WLTX-TV hit the campus for a look at how Saturdays in the fall means tens of thousands making their way to see the Gamecocks play!

There’s food, family, fun and there’s nothing like a Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina.

Want to go?

Get to the stadium area early—a minimum of three hours prior to kickoff is recommended. As you approach, you’ll notice various individuals directing vehicles into makeshift parking areas — ranging from grassy fields to paved lots bordering the streets near the stadium.

Your best bet is to select a location that promises a fun and lively atmosphere.

Consider the fields adjacent to the train tracks on Shop Road as a reliable choice. Additionally, non-reserved parking is often available at the State Fairgrounds.

Once you’ve secured your spot, set up your tailgate, begin your pregame party, and socialize with fellow football fans to make new pals.
