If you don’t have a digital thermometer, do you have a proven method to checking the doneness of steaks? The Grillax Finger Method will allow you to serve up a perfect steak exactly as your guests want it.
If there’s anything that can ruin the reputation of a member of GrillaxNation, it’s serving a steak to a guest that’s just isn’t cooked the way they want. Rare, Medium, Well-Done … when it comes to steaks, there can be plenty of finicky tastes out there.
Our finger method isn’t exactly science, but it’s pretty darn close to getting your steak to the correct doneness. Now, we know that not all steaks are the same — thickness, butcher cut, marbling, etc. This is a good way to get ‘close’ to perfection when your Thermapen One isn’t available.
The Finger Method
- Relax your hand, palm side up with fingers open.
- With opposite hand, touch your index finger to the base of your thumb. This is RARE.
- Now, with your relaxed hand, touch your index finger to your thumb lightly. Then, with opposite hand, touch your index finger to the base of your thumb. This is MEDIUM RARE.
- Touch your middle finger to your thumb lightly. Then, with opposite hand, touch your index finger to the base of your thumb. This is MEDIUM.
- Touch your ring finger to your thumb lightly. Then, with opposite hand, touch your index finger to the base of your thumb. This is MEDIUM WELL.
- Touch your pinky to your thumb lightly. Then, with opposite hand, touch your index finger to the base of your thumb. This is WELL DONE.
Now that the Grillax Finger Method is a part of your steak preparation procedure, your status as elite in Grillax Nation is back on track!
Happy Grilling!
